Farm Tomita in Hokkaido: Lavender Fields, Travel Time, and Map for Your Furano Visit

If you're planning a trip to Hokkaido, Farm Tomita is one of those must-see spots that you’ll remember long after your visit. Located in the picturesque town of Nakafurano, the farm is known for its stunning lavender fields and other colorful blooms. It’s easy to get to, especially if you’re traveling by car—a great way to fully enjoy the scenic beauty of the Furano area. Let me share some tips and highlights to help you make the most of your visit.

Address and Location

📍 15 Kisenkita, Nakafurano, Sorachi District, Hokkaido 071-0704, Japan

Farm Tomita is conveniently located in central Furano, making it an ideal stop on a road trip through Hokkaido. The surrounding landscape is just as beautiful as the farm itself, so taking your time to explore the area is highly recommended. It's about a 1-hour and 50-minute drive from Private Villa BIG EAST.

Why I Love Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita is famous for its lavender fields, but it offers so much more than just flowers. The farm has a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere that invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment. Here are a few spots I personally love:

  • Lavender East: One of the largest lavender fields in Japan, offering sweeping views of purple blooms against the backdrop of the Tokachi Mountains. It’s especially stunning if you arrive early in the morning.
  • Traditional Lavender Garden: This is a cozy, photogenic spot with rows of lavender that give off a calming fragrance. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll.
  • Flower Fields: Even outside of lavender season, Farm Tomita is filled with vibrant flowers like sunflowers, marigolds, and poppies. There’s always something beautiful to see.
  • Cafe and Gift Shop: Don’t miss the lavender soft-serve ice cream—it’s a simple treat that feels like a little taste of summer in Hokkaido.

How to Get to Farm Tomita

By Car

Driving is hands down the most convenient way to reach Farm Tomita. The trip from Sapporo takes about 2 hours 15 minutes via Route 38, and the drive itself is part of the experience. You’ll pass through charming towns, rolling fields, and scenic mountain views. Plus, having a car lets you explore nearby attractions like the Blue Pond or Biei’s Patchwork Road at your own pace.

There’s free parking at the farm, and the entrance is just a short walk from the lot. If you’re planning to explore more of Furano and Biei, having a car will make your trip much smoother.

Other Options

If you’re not driving, you can still get to Farm Tomita by train and bus, though it takes more time and involves a bit of walking.

  • By Train: Take the JR Limited Express from Sapporo to Furano Station (about 2 hours 30 minutes). From there, switch to a local train to Nakafurano Station, followed by a 10-minute walk to the farm.
  • By Bicycle: For those already in the area, renting a bike is a fun way to explore. The ride from Furano Station to Farm Tomita offers lovely countryside views.

How Much Time to Spend at Farm Tomita

I recommend setting aside at least 2 to 3 hours for Farm Tomita. If you’re a fan of photography or just love soaking in peaceful surroundings, you might end up staying longer. Here’s a sample schedule to help you plan your visit:

Time Activity
9:00 AM Arrive at Farm Tomita
9:30 AM Wander through Lavender East
10:30 AM Enjoy the cafe and try lavender ice cream
11:00 AM Browse the gift shop
11:30 AM Relax and take photos before heading to your next destination

Tips for Visiting Farm Tomita

  1. Plan for a Scenic Drive: If you have the option to rent a car, do it. The roads around Furano are some of the most beautiful in Hokkaido, and having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to stop and explore whenever something catches your eye.

  2. Visit in July for Lavender Season: The lavender fields are at their peak from mid to late July. Outside of that period, you’ll still find plenty of other flowers in bloom.

  3. Arrive Early: The farm can get busy during peak season, so arriving early in the morning is a great way to avoid the crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

  4. Try the Lavender Ice Cream: I know I’ve mentioned it already, but it’s really that good. Make sure to grab a cone while you’re there.

  5. Explore Nearby Attractions: If you’re driving, take the opportunity to visit other iconic spots in the area, like the Blue Pond, Shirahige Falls, and Biei’s scenic countryside. These are all within a short drive from Farm Tomita.

Farm Tomita is a gem in Hokkaido that offers more than just beautiful flowers. It’s a place where you can reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life—whether it’s the sight of endless lavender fields or the taste of a refreshing lavender soft-serve ice cream.
