Known for its fresh sushi, charming canals, and relaxing hot springs, this historic port town has a little bit of everything. If you’re traveling around Hokkaido by rental car, Otaru is a perfect stop to add to your itinerary.

How to Get to Otaru

By Car

Driving to Otaru is super easy and gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. From Sapporo, it’s about a 40-minute drive via the Sasson Expressway. The roads are well-maintained, and the coastal views along the way are stunning.
